How to get to Lake Garda by plane

The nearest airports.

Located between the regions of Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, Lake Garda is easily reachable even by travellers who, for reasons of distance, prefer to use the plane as their primary way of travelling.

The airports of Verona Villafranca, Brescia Montichiari, Verona Boscomantico and Trento are certainly the best options for those who want to reach Lake Garda by plane.

Before going into details, I would like to remind you that in addition to planes, it is also possible to reach Lake Garda quickly by car or train (see links at the end of the page).

In the handy list below, I have listed which airports are nearest to Lake Garda and where they are located in order to facilitate the planning of your next trip.

Valerio Catullo Airport of Verona Villafranca

The main airport located about 20 kilometres from Lake Garda is Verona Villafranca Airport, entitled to the Roman poet Gaio Valerio Catullo.

If you would like to learn more about Catullus and other illustrious figures, I invite you to read my article entitled 10 historical figures linked to Lake Garda.

Verona Villafranca Airport was used for many years as a military airport and still houses the headquarters of the 3rd Air Force Wing. In the early 1960s, the airport began its activity as a civil airport, hosting charter flights from northern Europe and offering daily connections to Rome.

Its main runway, 3,068 metres long, is capable of landing large aircraft. Thanks to its strategic location and ability to handle a high number of flights, Verona Villafranca Airport is an ideal choice not only for reaching Lake Garda, but also for visiting the nearby historic centre of Verona.

From Verona Villafranca Airport it is possible to reach any destination using various options including buses, taxis and car rental services. In addition to commercial flights, the airport also has a terminal dedicated to general aviation, providing services for private and business flights.

Gabriele D'Annunzio Airport of Brescia Montichiari

Another airport in the immediate surroundings of Lake Garda is Brescia Montichiari Airport, entitled to the famous Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio.

If you want to find out more about Gabriele D'Annunzio and the connection between him and Lake Garda, I invite you to read my in-depth article on Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, the magnificent mansion built by the poet in Gardone Riviera.

Inaugurated in 1909, the Brescia Montichiari airport is one of the oldest in Italy and has a rich history of aviation events.

Located in the municipality of Montichiari, about 25 kilometres from the lake, this airport has a runway 2,990 metres long. It accepts air traffic of private aircraft, offering handling services for private flights, including baggage loading and unloading, customs assistance, immigration and refuelling support.

Unlike the Verona Villafranca airport, the Brescia Montichiari airport is mainly a hub used for cargo traffic, being the main airmail sorting base for Poste Italiane.

Angelo Berardi Airport of Verona Boscomantico

Certainly smaller than the previous ones, but still important for general aviation and tourism in the region, is the Verona Boscomantico airport entitled to Angelo Berardi, a famous Italian aviator and military man.

Located just 7 kilometres from the historic centre of Verona and about 20 kilometres from Lake Garda, this airport boasts a history spanning more than a hundred years. Originally used as a military base during the First World War, today it is a civil airport that houses a flight academy, a gliding school, a parachuting school, an aeronautical workshop and a restaurant.

The runway of this airport is 1,014 metres long and allows small and medium-sized aircraft to take off and land.

Gianni Caproni Airport of Trento

The airport of Trento, located about 37 kilometres from the northernmost part of Lake Garda, has a runway 1,300 metres long. This airport, opened in 1969, is entitled to the designer and entrepreneur Gianni Caproni.

Today, Trento Airport is an important reference point for national and European tourist air traffic. It offers services for tourist aircraft, gliders and helicopters, houses the Gianni Caproni Aeronautical Museum and the headquarters of the Civil Protection Helicopter Unit of the Autonomous Province of Trento.

The airport is equipped with various facilities including a hotel, a restaurant and a free covered car park.
