Padenghe sul Garda

The old village and its castle.

by Marco Ghirello

The town of Padenghe sul Garda lies on the western shore of Lake Garda, between the towns of Moniga del Garda to the north and Desenzano del Garda to the south.

The first certain evidence of a settlement in this area dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of an ancient villa built between the 2nd and 3rd century AD and the lake port in the actual location of San Cassiano.

The particular territorial conformation of the countryside, with a hilly terrain inland, has been used by the locals over time for the cultivation of olives and vines. Padenghe is in fact part of the Valtenesi area, a very important territory for the production of quality olive oil and wine.

It is here that "Groppello" is cultivated, from which is produced the wine with the same name and the well-known "Chiaretto Valtenesi".

In the Middle Ages, around the year 1000, was built the castle, the most representative building in Padenghe. Like other similar structures built in neighbouring towns, its main function was to provide shelter for the inhabitants in the presence of enemy aggression.

Around the 14th century, the so-called "Castellino" was added, with its circular tower to the north and later the entrance tower to the castle, equipped with a walkway and drawbridge.

From the beginning of the 15th century, Padenghe, like all the other Garda communities, passed under the domination of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which used the harbour for the salt trade. Agriculture and commerce were therefore for a long period the main economic activities of this place.

Only in modern times, with the construction of the Gardesana road, began a slow transformation towards the current tourist destination that we can admire today.

What to see in Padenghe sul Garda

The panoramic position of the castle of Padenghe sul Garda offers a charming view of Lake Garda and the lush surrounding area, a truly strategic viewpoint for photography lovers. This castle has been very well preserved over the course of time and it is possible to walk through the narrow alleys enclosed by ancient stone houses.

A short distance from the castle, also on a small promontory outside the present town, stands the Pieve di Sant'Emiliano. This small religious building was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, under the authority of the bishop of Verona, and held a key role for the community until the 16th century, when the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built.

The Church of Madonna della Neve and the Church of Beata Vergine della Torricella, the latter located in the homonymous locality, are also of notable beauty.

Palazzo Barbieri, built around the 16th century and now housing the municipal offices, is also of notable interest.
