Peschiera del Garda

UNESCO World Heritage on Lake Garda.

by Marco Ghirello

The town of Peschiera del Garda lies on the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda, between the towns of Castelnuovo del Garda and Sirmione.

Located in a very suggestive position, between the plain and the moraine hills, it is characterised by the presence of the River Mincio, an emissary of Lake Garda that becomes a tributary of the River Po in south Mantua.

The strategic position of this place was evident as far back as the Bronze Age. To this period are related several archaeological finds from the area, as well as the important pile-dwelling settlements Belvedere and Frassino.

The latter are part of the "Prehistoric Pile-Dwelling Sites of the Alpine Arc" UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Roman times, Peschiera was an important commercial crossroads due to the presence of the nearby Via Gallica, which connected the main towns of the Po Valley.

Curious fact - Due to the fact that it was formerly known as Arilica, a name that remained so until around the 9th century, the inhabitants of Peschiera del Garda are still called "ariliciensi".

The economy of this area was for a long time mainly based on fishing, a remunerative activity that ensured the subsistence of numerous families.

Permanent fishing stations known as "Pescarezzo" were located near Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia. The last of these has been restored for historical purposes and can be seen on the Lungolago Bonomi.

What to see in Peschiera del Garda

The characteristic historic centre of Peschiera del Garda saw its initial development during the domination of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which built the fortress walls from the mid-16th century onwards. These impressive constructions became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site on 9 July 2017.

It was from a military point of view that Peschiera del Garda gained its fame becoming rightfully part of the history of Italy. From 1815 to 1866, it was one of the strongholds of the famous "Quadrilatero", a defensive system wanted by the Austrian Empire, consisting of the four fortresses of Verona, Legnago, Mantua and of course Peschiera.

Even today, walking through the streets of the town centre, visitors are still fascinated by the beauty of the historic buildings, the old military barracks and the ramparts that make this town on Lake Garda so unique.

Bastione San Marco, which delimits the part facing the river Mincio, Bastione Cantarane, which delimits the harbour area, the beautiful Porta Verona and Porta Brescia, ancient access roads to the fortress, and Ponte dei Voltoni, consisting of five arches over the water of Canale di Mezzo. Postcard-perfect places where it is absolutely recommended to stop and take a photograph.

Just outside the town, about a couple of kilometres away, stands the Sanctuary of Madonna del Frassino. Known throughout Italy as a popular pilgrimage destination, it was built on the spot where, according to tradition, a statuette of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd.
