SAN FELICE DEL BENACO
The town is located in a central position on the hill
that divides Salo and the Manerba Gulf. The surroundings, inhabited since
ancient times, reveal evidence of pilework sites, findings of the Roman Age,
and of an ancient necropolis. The whole region has a great landscape value
with the beautiful localities of Portese and the fascinating Garda island.
There also are stunning sightseeing towards the lowest Benaco basin. On the
typical Salo and Manerba gulfs, for example, the Rocca outline appears on
the lake sand and seems to picture Italian poet Dante Alighieri's profile.
From an Artistic point of view the seventeenth century Town Hall, once Pity
Mountain, needs to be mentioned together with the little San Fermo church
of the XV cent, which keeps a fresco painting by Giovanni from Ulma; and the
sixteenth century parish church which keeps a Romanino painting of the Virgin
in Glory and of Saints, together with C. Carloni and Bertanza pictures. By
far, the most interesting element is the Carmine Sanctuary with cypresses
that give their shade to the entrance porphyry pavement. Of a Romanesque -
Gothic influence, this building is near a protyrus with a fine bell tower.
The inside stands out for the gothic big arches and for the beautiful fourteenth
- fifteenth century fresco pictures cycle. In this circle are the paintings
made by famous Maestro San Felice, showing Saints and Annunciation, are to
be mentioned.
