MANERBA DEL GARDA
Manerba
little town is located itself in the central a part of the Valtenesi region
together with a characteristic promontory that surrounds the Western portion
of the Desenzano gulf.
In the boundaries some traces of Gallic-Roman sites were discovered. These
represent interesting archaeological documentation. It seems that this place
was in vogue during the Imperial age among Roman patricians who chose it as
their holiday destination, building rich dwellings and luxurious residences.
The Manerba promontory is characterised by steep walls, that dive in the lake.
From their tops a wide landscape on the entire surrounding territory can be
admired.
In this panoramic point a Cross made of iron can be found, together with a
few more traces of the late medieval rock citadel, which was a part of the
Longobard defending machinery. It was besieged for a long time by French people,
and witnessed the period of rebellion battles the against Brescia (XIII cent),
and the age of the dispute between Guelph.s and Ghibellines of the XIII cent,
only at the beginning of the second half of the XVI cent its first demolition
occurred. In 1787, for Venetian director disposition, it was destructed to
avoid the danger of a circle of brigands who had found a refuge inside, and
who left from there for their criminal ventures
