LIMONE SUL GARDA
GARDA
is a tourist a resort located in western part of the gardesan region. It is
considered as one of the banacese basin pearls. Its fortune and legend is
due to the extraordinary richness of the environment, landscapes, sights which
harmonise with the characteristics of the so called "olive climate".
Particularly, the landscape characteristic are the deep blue of lake waters
and an almost always cloudless and clear sky, integrated in an habitat with
a northern fjord fascinating dimension. Those elements have always attracted
cultured and well-read people who in Limone have had their inspirations and
ideas for their masterpieces, above all Goethe, but also Ibsen and Lawrence.
Limone sul Garda is a welcoming holiday resort provided with numerous facilities.
The natural warmth and kindness of their inhabitants provides another reason
to enhance and promote this tourist resort. The mild Riviera microclimate,
extends its beneficial effects up to the northern point of the lake, where
the particularly favourable and attractive Mediterranean vegetation push itself
to those latitudes. The vegetation shows us very peculiar exemplars for those
places such as: Palms, citron (trees), olive trees, the copse, and the always
present lemon trees.
He who assumed the etymological connection between the lemon plantations and
the actual tourist resort name, would make a big mistake: Lemon seems to came
from the Latin word limen that means "boundary". Even nowadays near
the northern inhabited part we find the boundary between Brescia and Trento
districts. Quarrels for this lake village possession between Lombard and Trento
people date back to the XIII cent, when Brescia had to use weapons to face
up to the threat of Arco earls and keep its territorial sovereignty.
Limone acquired its notoriety as a fishing centre, already in the XV cent,
and was particularly renowned for Carpione fishing, that was one of the most
important activity for its people. The practice endured up to a few decades
ago, before tourist phenomenon established widely.
In very recent times (end of April, beginnings of May 1985) an international
scientific-medical congress, held in this lake village, reached astonishing
conclusions on the impact that environment and lemon microclimate have on
human body. The slogan "In Limone they live longer..." seems to
be supported by scientific-medical research, which would prove beneficial
effect on arteriosclerosis and hearth strokes. Between its best known citizens
Daniele Comboni needs a mention, a missionary in African lands of the last
century who founded The Holy Heart children and The Nigrizia Nouns order.
The ancient Limone sul Garda centre comes from Lemon plantations located along
the lake. It features narrow little streets and very characteristic corners,
such as the little harbour where tourist ships are moored together with the
fishing ones. The eighteenth century S. Benedetto parish church keeps an altar
piece made by a Dutch artist from the XVI cent., two Andrea Celesti paintings-
representing the Magi adoration- the Levi dinner and a wooden fifteenth century
sculpture of a Blessed virgin.
There are numerous Venetian dwellings and residences which give character
to the streets of Limone. Finally to mention the little fourteenth cent. S.
Rocco church that keeps an altar piece by N. Grisiani ( XVIII cent.)
