LAZISE
A
very fascinating example of a little town, surrounded by medieval enclosing
walls, Laize appears on the eastern bank of Garda, on the widest point of
the lake, on the bottom of fruitful hills that form the moreinic gardesan
amphitheatre.
It is a very appreciated resort from an urbanistc and monumental point of
view, it has got an ancient central core very goodly kept, with buildings
which are historically and artistically very interesting.
It was a pilework site, a roman pagus called Lasitium (from Latin word lacus,
lake), becoming, then, a free Common supplied with a great autonomy. From
the end of the XII cent. it was acquired by Scaligeri, passing then to Visconti
and Venetian until the National unification. The Scaligero Castle, with battle
walls, forms together with Porta Nuova the medieval fortifications. The Custom
or Harbour, is a good example of Venetian engineering and is connected to
an ancient portal system. The Romanesque di S. Nicolò (XII cent.) church,
with a bell tower which was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, has on is side
a picturesque and fascinating harbour where traditional fishing boat are moored.
An interesting fourteenth century fresco painting cycle can be found within
the Romanesque enclose.
